Play and Creative Arts Therapy for Children aged 4-13 in Liverpool, Merseyside

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Tiger Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a type of therapy where play and art materials are used as the primary means for children to express themselves without needing to use words. Play Therapy is a directive and non-directive, child-centered form of therapy that helps children find healthier ways of communicating, develop fulfilling relationships, and increase resilience and emotional balance using various creative tools.

For children, finding the words to describe how they feel or why they behave in a certain way can be a struggle and difficult to explain. Using Play Therapy is a creative and dynamic way for children to explore their thoughts and feelings. During sessions, they can express themselves and address big emotions by using media such as art, sand play, drama, role-play, puppets, music, movement, and therapeutic storytelling in a safe, trusted, welcoming environment.

Hello, I’m Caroline Morris, a Certified Play Therapist in Liverpool with over thirty years of experience supporting children in various settings. My vocation has always been to ensure that every child feels encouraged, nurtured, and respected. At Tiger Play Therapy, I take a holistic approach to wellbeing, using play and the creative arts to help children aged 4 to 13 years express emotions and build confidence. Guided by the values of Trust, Imagination, Growth, Empathy, and Resilience (T.I.G.E.R.), I create a safe and caring space where children can explore their inner world, strengthen relationships, and flourish.

We can discuss your concerns, and you can complete the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, a short behavioural screening questionnaire. I work with children aged between 4 – 13 years old. The questionnaire is used to assess if Play Therapy is a suitable intervention for your child. The next step would be for us to meet and further discuss your concerns, as well as learn more about your child.

My Location

I work in schools, charities and children’s centres as well as working privately. Tiger Play Therapy provides sessions across the five boroughs of Merseyside, including Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, and St Helens.

Cancelation Policy

I appreciate that unforeseen circumstances may mean your child can’t attend their session. If this happens, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missed sessions without notice, will be charged in full. Regular attendance is important to the therapeutic process. Interruptions or unplanned absences can disrupt the sense of safety and continuity that supports your child’s progress. Wherever possible, we will work together to reschedule sessions to maintain consistency and support your child’s ongoing journey

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do about the concerns I have about my child?

Take the first step and seek support and advice from a professional. As a Play Therapist, I will work with you to facilitate a therapeutic intervention to meet your child’s needs

What is Play and Creative Arts Therapy, and how can they help support my child?

Play and Creative Arts Therapy is a directive and non-directive, child-led form of therapeutic intervention, where age-appropriate toys and creative mediums, enable play and activity to become the language through which they talk. This approach supports your child in making sense and managing difficult feelings and/or any upsetting events in their lives. Play and Creative Arts Therapy can also improve your child’s emotional expression, communication, and relationships.

What happens during a therapy session?

At Tiger Play Therapy, our playroom is a warm and welcoming environment, and a completely non-judgmental space for your child to explore any big feelings and emotions. During each weekly 40-minute session, they choose which creative medium or activity to engage in, or not. They direct the session and instinctively know what they need to do to process what is going on for them. This can be deep work, working from the unconscious to the conscious, but always at the child’s pace.

What is the role of the Play therapist?

The role of the therapist is to provide a trusting relationship where the child feels ‘emotionally held and safe’. This makes it easier for the child to express themselves and seek out a solution to their problems. Through this support, children gain insight and awareness of their mental well-being and how to stay on track now, and in the long term.

How many sessions does my child need?

This is dependent on the initial assessment conversations and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire scores. After a few sessions of getting to know your child, I will advise you on how many sessions I believe your child will need. However, the number of sessions initially advised is flexible, depending on a review period of between 8-10 sessions. Here, your child’s needs will be discussed, and the number of sessions will be revisited to ensure that the episode length is adequate to allow for progress of therapeutic outcomes. Short-term is considered as 12 sessions. Some children respond to short-term interventions; however, if problems persist, longer-term intervention will be required.

What is the importance of the therapeutic relationship for my child?

Developing a warm and welcoming environment is important, where your child can feel at ease and trust the therapist, knowing they are in a safe and non-judgmental space that is totally accepting.

Why is the session confidential, and what are the limits?

Like adults, when a child starts counselling, they too need to know, ‘I won’t tell anyone what we do in here, it is confidential.’ However, I do update you on how the sessions are progressing generally. The only limitation to this confidentiality is if your child tells me someone has hurt them.

What is the best way to inform my child that they are going to attend play therapy?

Honesty and transparency are always the best approach. Try to use age-appropriate, simple language to explain what play therapy is and why they are going. You might say something like:

“You’re going to spend some time with Caroline. She has lots of toys and creative things to help children share their thoughts and feelings through play.”

It’s best to avoid saying things like “You’ll have fun” or “You’re going to play games,” as your child’s experience may sometimes involve exploring deep or difficult feelings. Instead, focus on reassurance, that it’s a safe place, and that the therapist’s role is to listen, understand, and help them feel better inside.

Let your child know that there are no right or wrong ways to play in the sessions, and that they can share as much or as little as they wish. Emphasising their choice and control helps them feel secure and ready to engage at their own pace.

What can I do to help and support my child outside of the intervention?

Be consistent and encourage your child to attend sessions regularly. Be there to listen, reflect on what you hear, and connect with them in positive ways. This helps support them to feel safe and understood. Resist the urge to ask them about their sessions, as this may put pressure on the child to comment on something they have difficulty verbalising or understanding themselves – it’s important they can express themselves at their own pace.

What is the Goodman’s Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)?

The questionnaire takes between 5 and 10 minutes, and helps to capture the perspectives of children, their parents, and teachers. You will be asked to fill out the SDQ, a brief emotional and behavioural screening questionnaire for children and young people. There are 25 personality attributes consisting of 5 scales, each with 5 areas, such as emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, peer relationship issues, and prosocial behaviour.
